Laser Liposuction – Is It Worth It?

2021-03-31T12:04:20-04:00By |Non-Surgical Procedures|

Everyone loves lasers. In the past two decades various lasers and other electromagnetic energy delivering devices (ultrasound) have been introduced into liposuction. The manufacturers claim that lasers do a better job of removing fat or improve the final result by tightening skin. The science behind this is very weak to say the least. I personally have experience with liposuction assisted by ultrasound and three different types of lasers. All of these electromagnetic energy delivering systems have a target molecule that converts their particular wavelength into heat. That is, the common currency for all of the systems is heat. Why one manufacturer’s heat is [...]

What Is Fibrocystic Breast Disease?

2022-09-29T13:42:14-04:00By |Plastic Surgery News|

Fibrocystic breast disease is a common condition in which women develop hard filled sacs or fibrous tissue in the breasts. The condition generally feels worse in the period leading up to menstruation and lessens when menstruation occurs. It is so common that physicians now simply call it “fibrocystic breasts.” It generally develops during a woman’s 30s. The condition affects up to half of the women during their lifetimes. It causes symptoms of swelling, thickening of breast tissue, a feeling of lumps or ropes, sharp pain, itching, and a burning sensation. It is generally thought to be caused by hormonal changes within [...]

Easy Laser Cure for Rhinophyma

2021-03-31T11:57:48-04:00By |Non-Surgical Procedures|

Rhinophyma is a deformity of the nose that is created by exuberant growth of the sebaceous glands.  It is a benign condition although it can, on occasion, contain basal cell carcinoma. It’s growth is insidious and afflicts individuals with fair complexions, almost exclusively males. If one finds the condition embarrassing, there is no reason to live with it.  Laser reduction is easily perfomed in less than an hour.  A general anesthetic is preferred and the convalescence is easy although the nose will look unsightly for a week or so. Recurrence is possible, but rare after thorough reduction.

Swelling After Liposuction: What To Do

2021-03-31T11:58:15-04:00By |Plastic Surgery Procedures|

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which fat deposits are removed from beneath the skin to provide a more attractive shape. Generally, the hips, waist, thighs, buttocks, back, neck, arms, calves, and ankles are reshaped for a thinner appearance. Liposuction is sometimes done in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery techniques. How Is Liposuction Done? In the procedure, a thin tube called a cannula with a vacuum attached is inserted under the skin and gently worked to loosen and remove the excess fat. A number of techniques are used, including injecting fluid to help break down fatty tissue, ultrasound waves to break [...]

Why You Shouldn’t Massage Scars

2021-03-31T11:58:24-04:00By |Skincare|

It should surprise no one that patients want to do whatever they can to improve their scars after surgery. Many patients ask me when they should start massaging scars, how often, and for how long. The answer is “don’t massage the scar." I have not read anything in the scientific literature that convinces me that massage does anything to help the final outcome of a scar. There is much in the scientific literature to support gentle treatment of the wound for the best and quickest result. Massaging a scar causes the release of histamine which increases inflammation and the amount of [...]

Pain After Breast Augmentation

2021-03-31T12:03:44-04:00By |Plastic Surgery Procedures|

A breast augmentation is an operation, so naturally, there is some post-operative pain.  Patients experience pain differently after any operation because of personal differences.  Nevertheless, there is a fairly predictable range of discomfort after the procedure. Post-operative pain is greatly influenced by whether the breast implants are placed above or below the pectoralis muscle.  Implantation above (subglandular) is much less painful since the pectoralis muscle is undisturbed. Women describe subglandular pain as an uncomfortable “fullness” or, for those that have experienced both, “feels like I need to breastfeed”. In a submuscular placement, the pectoralis is not cut but it is stretched and [...]

Stem Cell Snake Oil

2021-03-31T12:03:33-04:00By |Plastic Surgery News|

Stem cell science has the potential to open new approaches to medical problems. As with most groundbreaking discoveries, public interest grew into public enthusiasm which morphed into public obsession. This sets the stage for the entrance of the snake oil salesmen. Plastic surgeons have been injecting fat for decades. Fat transfer and grafting definitely works in certain clinical situations. It is embarrassing, though, that the science of what goes on at a cellular and molecular level is really thin. Injected fat has a fat cell component and a stem cell component. We really don’t know which cells do what. A stem cell [...]

Top 5 Reasons to Flee a Cosmetic Surgeon’s Office

2021-03-31T12:03:26-04:00By |Plastic Surgery Procedures|

1. The surgeon points out aesthetic flaws you didn’t inquire about. Suppose a woman sees a surgeon about breast augmentation and the surgeon, without prompting, asks “Have you thought about doing something about your nose?” The purpose of aesthetic surgery is to make people feel better about themselves.  Planting doubt for the purpose of generating business is unethical. 2. The operation you are considering can be performed by him in his office but not in a hospital. A doctor can pretty much do anything he wants in his office.  If he cannot do the proposed operation in a hospital, it is [...]

5 Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation

2021-03-31T12:03:12-04:00By |Plastic Surgery Procedures|

1. Women with breast implants can’t breastfeed. Not all women can breastfeed with or without breast implants.  After breast augmentation, breastfeeding is possible regardless of whether the implant is above or below the pectoralis muscle. 2. Breast augmentation makes mammography less accurate. Implants do indeed make mammograms more complicated but not less accurate.  Oftentimes additional views of the breast are needed to “see around” the breast implant.  However, if the mammogram is performed properly, it is as accurate as if no implant were in place. 3. Breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer. Actually, the reverse is true-breast implants slightly [...]

Gynecomastia: Male Treatment Options

2021-03-31T12:02:17-04:00By |Plastic Surgery Procedures|

Gynecomastia is breast development in a male. Since breasts are composed of both glandular and fatty tissue, the relative contribution of each determines the proper treatment. Most gynecomastia is idiopathic (it just happens). Occasionally, medications or medical conditions can be responsible for the problem. These are sorted out before surgical treatment. You can also read more about gynecomastia here. Time About 30% of teenage boys develop some modest gynecomastia as they pass through puberty. Almost always it disappears without treatment although its complete resolution may take a couple of years. The small breast bud can be tender which is an occasional indication [...]
