Mommy Makeover

Restore the Look and Feel of Your Post Baby Body

Over my 35-year career as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I have performed Mommy Makeover operations to reverse the aesthetic changes of pregnancy. I have observed firsthand the positive impact on self-esteem and confidence women experience after recovery from corrective surgery.

Both pregnancy and breastfeeding change the body. Oftentimes, these changes are unwanted. Thankfully, we offer procedures to empower women to restore their bodies with cosmetic surgery.

Over the years, the techniques for the procedures for a Mommy Makeover improved with emerging technologies and knowledge. We now have best practices that reduce the convalescence period and pain while also decreasing the surgical risks. Women today have more options to improve the appearance of their bodies from the effect of pregnancy. I am excited to be a part of this process.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

Have you heard the term mommy makeover but aren’t sure exactly what it means? A mommy makeover is a combination of surgical cosmetic procedures designed to correct the physical impact of pregnancy and breastfeeding. With a mommy makeover, women have an option to restore their appearance and confidence.

The beautiful thing about a mommy makeover is that it is customizable to meet your specific needs and desires. You only include the procedures designed to meet your aesthetic goals. For example, if you want to create a slimmer abdomen and reduce sagging in your breast, you add a tummy tuck and breast lift in your mommy makeover. A mommy makeover is not one size fits all, which makes it an excellent option for a variety of women.

In the video below Dr. Zubowicz answers the question; what is a mommy makeover?.

Procedure Options

With a mommy makeover, we focus on procedures specially designed to repair or restore your body from changes experienced during pregnancy. By combining multiple procedures into one surgical experience, you limit the recovery process and save money. Plus, you achieve the results at one time versus spreading several surgeries across many months or even years.

Tummy Tuck

The main procedure in a mommy makeover is an abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck. During pregnancy, the abdominal tissues expand, which leads to sagging and loose skin after pregnancy. In fact, for some women, the tissue that joins the two lateral abdominal sections permanently tears. This makes it impossible to tighten the stomach muscles with exercise alone. Even slimmer women still find their stomach protrudes. Thankfully, a tummy tuck repairs this issue.

A tummy tuck includes the removal of excess skin and fat while also repositioning and tightening the muscles, skin, and other tissue. The goal with a tummy tuck is a firmer and tighter abdominal profile. A tummy tuck has the most significant recovery time of all the procedures offered in a mommy makeover but often achieves the most desirable results.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the removal of fat tissue from the body. A liposuction procedure is usually minimally invasive and has a quick recovery time. It is easy to add liposuction as part of other mommy makeover procedures. The goal of liposuction is to remove excess fat from a specific area of the body to improve the body’s contours and proportions.

Liposuction works for most parts of the body. With a mommy makeover, liposuction of the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, back, and chest are popular add-on procedures. Liposuction works best for patients at a healthy weight, as liposuction is not a weight loss solution.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer is an innovative solution to take fat from one area of the body and reinsert the fat into a different area of the body. With fat transfer, the patient has the option to use their fat to enhance a specific feature, like the breasts, buttocks, or face.

Fat transfer is a good option for a mommy makeover to restore volume while reducing fat. Liposuction removes the fat. Then, the fat undergoes treatment to ensure a safe injection in the new location. Many women find great satisfaction with fat transfer surgery.

Labiaplasty

A labiaplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation procedure designed to reduce the length of the labia minora. This procedure has the dual benefit of achieving aesthetic goals while also reducing pain and inconvenience caused by asymmetry in the labia.

The recovery time for a labiaplasty takes up to six weeks for a full recovery, but most patients can return to work and other non-strenuous activities after one week. Women opt for this procedure to correct damage experienced during childbirth and restore the vaginal area.

Breast Augmentation with Implants

Breast augmentation is another popular procedure in a mommy makeover. Breast augmentation with implants offers an enhanced size of the breasts, which can lose volume after pregnancy and nursing. Breast implants also correct asymmetry, which some women experience after pregnancy.

Dr. Zubowicz offers both silicone and saline implants. More women opt for silicone breast implants over saline; however, both types have benefits based on each woman’s unique goals. We offer a variety of sizes and shapes to customize your breast augmentation procedure.

Breast Lift and Breast Lift with Implants

A breast lift procedure, also known as a mastopexy, works to reshape and rejuvenate the breasts from the impact of pregnancy and nursing. A breast lift corrects sagging and other contouring issues by removing excess skin and tightening the tissue.

A breast lift can occur with or without implants. It’s important to note that implants alone will not correct sagging breasts. To achieve the desired lift and volume, consider a breast lift with implants.

Breast Reduction

A mammaplasty is a technical name for a breast reduction. Frequently, women who desire a breast reduction as part of a mommy makeover had large breasts before pregnancy, and the breasts add volume after pregnancy. A breast reduction offers a way to create a more proportioned figure and reduce the discomfort of large or heavy breasts.

A breast reduction removes excess tissue and fat from the breasts while also reshaping the breast mound and resizing and repositioning the nipple and areola. The result is a sleeker contour with a more youthful appearance. Most women who elect for a breast reduction greatly appreciate the

About Mommy Makeovers

A Mommy Makeover is a combination of surgical procedures aimed at women who have experienced pregnancy. The most common combination of operations included with a Mommy Makeover are an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck, and breast augmentation, with or without a breast lift and reshaping. Liposuction is also often a part of the combination.

Most women can successfully have a mixture of procedures completed at one time. Combining procedures means you get the results you want with one surgery. You then only go through the recovery process once. In addition, combined procedures reduce the cost when compared to multiple, separate surgeries.

We work with each patient to determine the best process for your unique needs. We always prioritize patient health with any plastic or reconstructive surgery. Each patient receives a customized surgical plan prior to surgery. This ensures you know exactly the procedures included in your specific Mommy Makeover.

The Mommy Makeover is for women who have undergone pregnancy and want to restore their body from the changes experienced due pregnancy and breastfeeding. A good candidate for surgery is any woman in good health with no planned future pregnancies.

We do not recommend a Mommy Makeover for women who plan to have future pregnancies. This is because additional pregnancies may undo the surgical procedures. It is best to wait until you no longer desire more pregnancies and have finished breastfeeding.

However, a Mommy Makeover should not negatively impact future pregnancies if they occur after the surgery. We simply recommend waiting so that the aesthetic goals achieved through surgery last.

We do evaluate each surgical candidate on a case by case basis to ensure your aesthetic goals align with the surgical procedures. Again, we always prioritize health with any surgical procedure.

Drains are not a standard part of the Mommy Makeover surgery on the abdomen or the breasts. However, as a surgeon, I walk through the possible methods used for each surgery. Based on the patient’s size or specific desired procedures, I discuss the detailed surgical impact as part of the surgical plan.

However, use of drains isn’t typical for Mommy Makeover procedures.

A Mommy Makeover operation is physiologically significant for the patient, meaning it is a serious surgery with medical risks to the patient’s health and body. However, the surgery is much easier with a shorter recovery process than a decade ago. Patients may experience swelling, bruising and soreness post-surgery.

Long-acting anesthetics have greatly diminished post-operative discomfort. Typically, patients can get up and move around almost immediately after surgery. Also, most patients can drive and perform non-strenuous activities within a week or two. This includes returning to work if the patient’s job isn’t strenuous.

The procedure is an invasive surgery requiring general anesthesia. Mommy Makeover surgery is usually an outpatient procedure. Patients do need reliable transportation and at least 24 hours of care after the surgery. Patients have the option to stay in our overnight suite for an additional cost.

Patients cannot participate in strenuous exercise, including any exercises that target core or abdominal muscles, for six weeks after surgery. Failing to follow the recovery procedures could impact the results of the surgery and the patient’s health.

Three months after surgery, the patient should experience a full recovery with no activity restrictions.

It’s exciting to think about rejuvenating your body after the impacts of pregnancy and breastfeeding. With a Mommy Makeover, all patients realize a major improvement in body contour after the operation.

The trade-off from the aesthetic improvements are the scars required to achieve these results. As part of the pre-surgery discussions, I will show you how typical scars appear at different stages of recovery. I believe patients need to understand both the benefits and trade-offs of any plastic or reconstructive surgery.

Depending on the specific procedures included in your customized Mommy Makeover surgery, you will experience different results. A tummy tucks results in the tightening of the abdominal area with the removal of fat and excess skin. Liposuction added to the Mommy Makeover removes unwanted fat to specific areas of the body.

The impact to the breasts post-surgery depends on the type of surgery needed. Some patients include a breast lift while others may add breast implants. Still, other patients may include a breast reduction. It all depends on the specific needs of the patient. The end results include improvements to the breast area based on the patient’s specific goals.

Overall, a Mommy Makeover reduces the visual impact of pregnancy for a renewed look and feel to your body.

A mommy makeover is a surgical procedure that significantly impacts the body. Each woman’s experience will differ based on the specific procedures included. Yet, most women find great satisfaction in the results of a mommy makeover.

Most women include a tummy tuck as part of the mommy makeover. Relative to other aesthetic procedures, an abdominoplasty is a considerable procedure. This means the recovery and invasiveness of the procedure are greater than with some other aesthetic surgeries, like breast implants as a standalone procedure. However, with the advent of long-acting, injectable anesthetics into the abdominal wall at the time of surgery, recovery is substantially easier than years ago.

A mommy makeover offers the benefit of only having to undergo surgery once while achieving multiple aesthetic goals.

The various objectives of each procedure differ; however, the main objective of a mommy makeover does not. The primary goal with a mommy makeover is to repair the body after pregnancy to improve confidence and restore a youthful look and feel.

More specifically, a mommy makeover aims to remove excess fat and skin, tighten the abdominal area, and increase volume where needed, like with breast implants. Each woman’s body changes in unique ways after pregnancy. A mommy makeover allows you to address the issues unique to your body and your goals.

A mommy makeover makes a good investment. The results can last a lifetime. However, as we said, if you become pregnant again, your body will experience the changes associated with pregnancy. If you do not experience another pregnancy and stay in relatively good physical shape, you should experience the results of the mommy makeover for many years.
